VINCI Airports and TotalEnergies join forces to offer sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and an electric charging station for aircraft at Annecy Haute-Savoie Mont-Blanc airport

  • As part of the renewal of its refuelling contract, newly awarded to TotalEnergies, Annecy Haute-Savoie Mont-Blanc Airport, managed by VINCI Airports, is now making sustainable aviation fuel available to airlines.
  • TotalEnergies' service also includes the installation of an electric charging station for light aircraft.
  • These decarbonisation initiatives are part of VINCI Airports' environmental policy, which has been in place since 2022 at Annecy Airport, which is owned by the Haute-Savoie Department.

Annecy Haute-Savoie Mont-Blanc Airport is continuing its modernisation with two objectives: improving the quality of service and decarbonising its activities. To this end, a new contract for the refuelling of aircraft was signed with TotalEnergies in the spring of 2024.

This contract provides for the distribution of alternative aviation fuel containing SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel ) and the creation of a semi-underground tank to allow distribution to airlines and users of the platform. SAF represents a concrete and immediate alternative to fossil-based fuels. The SAF distributed at the Annecy Haute-Savoie Mont-Blanc platform is produced in France by TotalEnergies from waste and residues from the circular economy, such as used cooking oil. It is then blended up to 35% with conventional aviation fuel (Jet A-1). In its pure form, SAF reduces CO2 emissions by up to 90% over the entire life cycle, compared to its fossil equivalent.

In line with VINCI Airports' commitment to the Department of Haute-Savoie when it resumes the operation of the infrastructure in 2022, to contribute to the decarbonisation of Annecy Airport's activities and those of its partners, TotalEnergies' service also includes the installation of a charging station for electric aircraft with a minimum power of 22 kW. This will strengthen the territorial network of electric charging points between the platforms managed by VINCI Airports in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.

The installation of this equipment will be effective in October 2024.

"VINCI Airports was a pioneer in making biofuels available in 2021 within its network of airports in France. With Annecy airport, five of our airports now offer them, which we welcome. The installation of the electric charging station aims to encourage the deployment of fleets of electric aircraft, which was demonstrated as part of the Electric tour, organised by VINCI Airports and the French Aeronautics Federation at the end of May"  says Valérie Vesque-Jeancard, Deputy Director of VINCI Airports.

"Supporting our customers in the aviation sector in their decarbonization objectives is an integral part of TotalEnergies' climate ambition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, together with society. As a multi-energy company, we are proud to offer a diversified product range to meet the needs of users of Annecy Haute-Savoie Mont-Blanc airport, drawing on our expertise and know-how" said Louise Tricoire, Senior Vice President, Aviation and Marine Fuels at TotalEnergies.
